Your Thanksgiving Inventory Devotional

Read This: “All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change.” (James 1:17-18)

Think: There’s so much in life we take for granted. Every day we are bombarded with advertisements reminding us of what we don’t have. Open a magazine, turn on the TV, or go on the internet and messages pop up all over trying to sell us all the things we need. Listening to that every day, it’s easy to forget the many, many blessings we already have and enjoy.

I started making my blessings list and I was surprised by how long it was. The more I wrote down, the more I was reminded of. There are big ones like salvation, family, friends, health, shelter, and food, along with little specific and sometimes silly ones like, hot water in the winter, drive through coffee shops, and text messaging reminders from my dentist. Sure, I felt a little silly writing some of them down, but the truth is that I really am blessed by a perfectly toasted marshmallow. God asks us to be grateful for everything and mindful that all good things are ultimately from him.

In this inventory, don’t just list the big ticket items. This season, let’s take a step back from the materialism. Instead of focusing on all the decorations, menu items, entertainment, and other things we need to create the perfect holiday memory, and embrace Thanksgiving by truly being content with what God has already given us. We’re blessed in big ways and small. Don’t forget to thank him for the many different ways he shows his love and grace to you.

Ask: Start your inventory list! Ask God to bring specific things, people, and situations to mind.

Pray: For at least one day, try to go through your day thanking God for all the big and little blessings as you come across them.
