A Call To Summer Service

Read This:

Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity to indulge your flesh, but through love serve one another.

Think:

I have the same feelings about summer that Olaf the snowman does: it’s a time of year where everything just seems better. It’s all grilling, swimming pools, no school, and staying lighter out longer. And if we’re being truthful, aren’t all of those things way better against the backdrop of summer than, say, the barren depths of winter?

Specifically, I look forward to summer because of all the freedom that comes with it. Both in the figurative sense: freedom from snow (unless we’re talking snow cones) and the literal: Independence Day and the freedom to eat as many hot dogs and hamburgers that I want.

But just because it’s Summer (you really need to say it like Olaf sings it...try that line again), it doesn’t mean that it has to be all about us. Why not make this Summer about serving others?

It’s common for most churches to experience a big drop-off in attendance during this season and it’s certainly easy for our mindsets to become one that is more about us and less about others.

So this summer, we want to encourage you to seek out ways to serve. Don’t worry that it’s too small or big, just focus on finding ways to serve others more than you serve yourself. If there’s one thing Olaf the Snowman and I can agree on, it’s that helping out others is never a bad thing!

Comment:

What are some ways you plan on serving this Summer? What are some ways you’ve served in the past?

Pray:

God, I pray for guidance in showing me opportunities where I can serve you this summer. Maybe it’s in the church, outside the church or even in my home, I want to know how I can best serve You and Your will. Open my eyes to the ways that I can be a light for others!
