Who Are You Following?

Read This: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” – John 10:27-28

Think: In college, we went horseback riding as a large dorm floor group date. We had about 75 people on horseback for a midnight ride. There were trail guides that we were supposed to follow throughout this back country. It was dark, so I just kept following the horse in front of me. We wound up in a bunch of trees having to duck to avoid being taken out by branches. Something told me this wasn’t right, but I convinced myself that I was following appropriately. Finally, we entered a clearing only to find out that we hadn’t been following a trail guide the whole time.

I wonder if this is how many “Christians” will find themselves at the end of their journey on this earth – realizing that they hadn’t really been following THE Trail Guide the whole time. Jesus is the only trail guide who knows how to navigate this world with perfection. He came and showed us how to live, and He offers to lead us by the gift of His Holy Spirit.

The reality is that we all are following someone or something right now. Perhaps it is our sinful desires. We are led by our whim and passion. Perhaps it is the patterns we have learned from our upbringing. Perhaps it is the world. This is one of the reasons that it is so good to start your day off in the Word and in prayer. It is a way to focus on who we are following and make sure that we are being good followers of the true Trail Guide.

Ask: Invite God to reveal to you any inappropriate desires, patterns, or people that you are following right now. Confess those to the Lord and surrender them to Him. How have you been following Christ lately? What reward have you seen from following the true Trail Guide?

Pray: Thank you, Lord, for being a great leader. Thank you for inviting me to follow you. I need a leader that I can trust and there is none greater than You. Teach me to follow You in all things.
