SYNOPSIS

In the series 'Songs of the Savior,' five biblical characters from the Christmas story embark on extraordinary journeys, each encountering unique conflicts as they strive to fulfill their divine tasks. Through the power of music, these captivating short films explore the triumphs, tribulations, and unwavering faith of Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, the shepherds, and the Magi as they play their vital roles in the tale of Jesus’s birth.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS

JOSEPH, MALE, 20s-30s, ANY ETHNICITY, LEAD ROLE.

Joseph finds himself overwhelmed with anxiety as he meticulously prepares for the 90-mile journey by donkey to comply with the Roman census. Compounding his worries, he grapples with the realization that his beloved fiance is carrying a child that is not his own. In the midst of his preparations, Joseph's trusty donkey becomes a silent confidant, lending a listening ear as he pours out his fears and concerns, carrying the weight of his uncertainties about their

upcoming journey.

BALTHASAR, MALE, AGE 40+, ANY ETHNICITY, LEAD ROLE.

One of the three Magi who embarked on the arduous journey to witness the birth of baby Jesus, is a dignified and wise man of exotic origin. With his regal bearing and flowing robes, his presence commands respect and reverence. His deep, penetrating eyes reflect a lifetime of spiritual devotion and unwavering faith, as he returns on the long journey home with his companions. But what he did not expect was to flee from Herod, taking an alternate journey home.

MELCHIOR, MALE, AGE 40+, ANY ETHNICITY, LEAD ROLE.

A Magi of Eastern descent who embarked on the sacred pilgrimage with his two companions to witness the birth of baby Jesus, is a learned and scholarly figure. His long beard and furrowed brow speak of wisdom and intellectual depth. Carrying an aura of tranquility and enlightenment, Melchior must confess to his companions of the vision he had that will no doubt put their lives in jeopardy.

ELIZABETH, FEMALE, AGE 60+, ANY ETHNICITY, LEAD ROLE.

A pregnant woman in her 70s, exudes grace and enduring faith as she carries the miraculous gift of life within her. Her gentle presence and warm smile provide solace and reassurance to her cousin, Mary, in her moment of doubt and uncertainty. With her hands gently resting on Mary's shoulders, Elizabeth imparts words of wisdom, reminding her of the divine purpose behind God's plan and instilling within Mary the strength and courage to embrace her role as the chosen vessel.

MARY, FEMALE, AGE 20’s - 30’s, ANY ETHNICITY, LEAD ROLE.

A young woman of humble faith and profound loyalty wrestles with her own doubts and uncertainties as she carries the secret of her miraculous pregnancy. In the presence of her wise cousin, Elizabeth, Mary's eyes reflect a mixture of fear and hope, as she questions her own ability to fulfill the divine plan laid out before her. Yet, within her, a flicker of determination ignites, as Elizabeth's reassuring words and gentle encouragement awaken Mary's resilience, reminding her that she is chosen for a purpose far greater than her own understanding.

LEO, MALE, AGE 30+, ANY ETHNICITY, STRONG SUPPORTING ROLE.

A shepherd worn down by doubt, fearing the repercussions of their extraordinary encounter. His voice echoes the sentiment of caution, worried about the potential dangers they may face if their story reaches the ears of Herod. However, as his companion, Oliver, passionately reaffirms their shared experience and purpose, Leo's skepticism begins to crumble, replaced by a flicker of hope, reigniting his belief in the miraculous event they witnessed and their charge to spread the joyful news of the Messiah's birth.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Brian Cates is an Emmy award-winning filmmaker, and is the co-writer and director of FAMILY CAMP, a feature-length family comedy released by Lions Gate and now available on Amazon Prime. Over the past 15 years he has directed nearly 600 short films with The Skit Guys, and with them has built one of the largest faith-based short film distribution networks in the world. Brian lives in Oklahoma City with his wife and best friend, Jina, and their three daughters.

Tommy Woodard and Eddie James are two best friends from high school who perform clean, family comedy for millions each year.
